The Assistant Accountant may be part of a company’s accounting team, or they may work for an accounting agency that provides outsourcing services to various businesses and institutions. The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Accountant are to help in the preparation of company financial statements, draft financial documents, reconcile bank records and provide basic bookkeeping services. This is typically an entry-level position for those seeking a career in finance.


Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Accountant

Specific responsibilities of the Assistant Accountant are likely to vary some from company to company, or from agency to agency, but most can expect to be responsible for some or all of the following:

• Record daily financial transactions and help maintain company ledgers.
• Draft financial documents such as invoices, payables and purchase orders.
• Work with the Finance Manager and other members of the accounting department.
• Manage billing of and payments to third-party service providers and vendors.
• Verify payments to such third-party providers.
• Help the payroll department when necessary.
• Spot bookkeeping errors, track them to the source and make corrections.
• Report to senior members of the accounting team.


Skills of the Assistant Accountant

In most cases the Assistant Accountant candidate will not need to have an accounting degree (although it would help), nor do they need to demonstrate years of experience in accounting. They will, however, need to possess some or all of the following skills:

• Strong computer skills, including basic knowledge of current accounting software.
• Strong computational and math skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• A detail-orientated mindset with good organisational skills.
• The ability to work both independently and as a member of an accounting team.

While the Assistant Accountant is an often unheralded part of the accounting team their work is vital to ensuring the smooth operation of that team.
